Ellen Kent's La Boheme at Alexandra Theatre

Why see Ellen Kent's La Boheme?

The World's Most Famous Opera

Leading British theatremaker Ellen Kent presents the 2025 UK tour of them most romantic opera in the world, Puccini's La Boheme. The hotly anticipated production promises a full orchestra, lavish costumes and sets, as well as internationally acclaimed singers, a brass band, whirling snow effects and rumour has it, a real dog!

What Is The Story?

Puccini's opulent arias, dramatic orchestral arrangements, and rich, lyrical melodies tell the story of the Bohemians, a group of penniless writers, artists and free spirits in 19th-century Paris. Tender seamstress Mimi and poet Rodolfo fall in love at first sight, whilst their friends Marcello and his mistress Musetta's love is beset by constant bickering. The course of true love never did run smooth and the doomed Mimi and Rodolfo part ways whilst the truth of their parting heralds fatal tragedy.

Enjoyed the experience

I enjoyed the production and found more humour in it than I’d ever noticed before, including the entrance of the soldiers. The sets were good despite the Eiffel Tower which really is unnecessary, we all know it’s set in Paris. I enjoyed the characters of Colline, Schaunard, and especially Marcello but unfortunately was a little underwhelmed by Rodolfo. In his defence perhaps I’ve spent too many years listening to Pavarotti play this role alongside Freni (Decca). I did however feel that Mimi’s voice more than compensated only to be stunned and thoroughly entertained by that of Musetta. I didn’t get the intense emotional feel I’ve had at other productions, the Rodolfo effect perhaps, but still enjoyed the experience. Well worth a visit as it tours the UK. ... Read more
